Besides being related, Drs. Adam Davis and Jerry Leake share a special bond.

Just what the doctor ordered-
Chiropractor formulates own, unique answer to national health care crisis

Barbara King

Inspired by his heritage and a desire to do good, one local health professional is committed to making care accessible to all citizens of Jennings County.

"My goal is affordable health care," says Dr. Adam Davis, a chiropractor who is a member of the Greensburg-based Health 1st team. He joined that practice upon completing his training at the Logan College of Chiropractic just west of St. Louis.

His choice of the chiropractic profession was, you could say, 'in the genes.' Davis is the grandson of the county's first practitioner of that discipline, Dr. Jerry Leake, who opened an office in North Vernon back in 1961. Davis' uncle, Gary Leake, is a chiropractor in Lawrenceburg.

"I grew up with it (chiropractic)," says the young man. "I've seen all it could do. I couldn't really fight it. I guess it's in the blood."

Leake and his wife Rose well remember the resistance they encountered from the local medical profession when they arrived here. One local landlord whose daughter was married to a local physician refused to rent to them.

Now, almost 50 years later, the medical profession recognizes and even welcomes the role this discipline plays in one's overall health. By keeping the musculoskeletal system aligned, the body can function at its maximum level.

"If your nerves are working perfectly, you have good health," explains Dr. Leake. "The idea is to restore normal nerve supply to the body."

With four years experience, Davis' commitment to his profession remains enthusiastic. "I love it," he says. "I feel I could do it for 100 years. I'm just getting started."

A less desirable aspect of this profession, though, is dealing with insurance companies. "Health care is in a lot of trouble. I'm tired of playing the health insurance game," Davis admits. "Patients don't benefit."

Take that disillusionment and pair it with his love of chiropractic and his love of Jennings County, and you can figure out why Davis has opened up a local office. You'll find him Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at his uncle's garage on Hwy. 7 N., Paswater Automotive Service, where he has a spacious office. He asks you call for an appointment, 953-3644 (which is a local number).

What Davis is offering is a bare bones version of your normal chiropractic experience. He describes his venture as a small office "without all the bells and whistles."

For example, he does not have an X-ray machine, but works with fellow North Vernon chiropractor Trevor Miller if a patient needs that procedure. There is no receptionist, either, and fees are pretty much based on what one can afford to pay. An adjustment, for example, would be $25.

"My goal and vision here is different than at Greensburg, which is insurance-based," he continues. With so many people in Jennings without health insurance or with high insurance deductibles, "most can't afford to come in or continue their care.

"I wanted to create something where everybody could get the care they need."

Davis is also recycling at least one piece of equipment that former patients of Dr. Leake might recognize-the green treatment table which Leake used in his office until his retirement in April 1993.

"The tables last forever. I love to see Adam use it," the venerable doctor says.

It's clear there is a special bond the two share along with their mutual profession. "I've learned things from him that I never learned in school," says Davis of his grandfather.

"I wanted to pick up the torch and carry it on and I wanted to create something where everybody could get the care they need.

"This is my way to create my own health care solution."
